At Mustamäe State Gymnasium in Tallinn, students and teachers use the educational version of GED-GPT for language learning, personalized tutoring, and lesson planning.

While AI offers benefits such as simplifying tasks and supporting lesson preparation, educators emphasize the importance of careful task design and digital literacy. Teachers note that AI should supplement, not replace, traditional teaching methods, and highlight the need for increased awareness about data privacy and responsible use of AI tools.

It's time for German class at Mustamä State Gymnasium in Tallinn. Write three sentences about your summer without GED-GPT. Then ask the AI to correct them. High school German lessons supported by AI. The edu version of GED-GPT that is programmed specifically for education. It offers school-friendly features like personalized tutoring. But AI is nothing new for the students here. I am using GED-GPT for example to make the tasks easier. If for example maths, I don't know how to solve it, then I will ask GED-GPT can you explain it to me. Or if it's still too hard I will ask can you explain it to me in a high schooler level. Estonia is leading the way in AI-powered education. And the first country to introduce it nationwide. One in four Estonians actively use GED-GPT already. Officials believe it will prepare younger generations for the jobs of the future. German teacher Carmen Kiesel sees the potential for AI learning but also the limits. In her language class communication is key. And that's where, for her, AI often falls short. AI-based tasks must be carefully designed, she says. If you just let the students search for an answer to a question, AI will simply provide it. Tasks must be thoughtfully prepared so that AI supports learning instead of replacing it. That means more prep work for the teacher. And if you think that AI itself provides great teaching methods, it doesn't. The teacher has to think carefully about how to structure the lessons so that AI actually brings added value. Many teachers still lack the knowledge to use AI effectively in the classroom, says educational technologist Emma-Lore Senitam. For now, most use it to plan lessons rather than teach them. Many of the teachers in our house have said, like, I have no idea what to do for the classroom. They go to GED-GPT, ask for a lesson plan, they get something from there. Then they know how to start building up their lesson. In that way, it really helps. But AI can do more than just prep work. It can answer basic questions, freeing up time for deeper discussion in class. In the classroom, of course, yeah, maybe the teacher is a quicker way to get your answers, but they need to learn how to teach themselves and be responsible for their studies. We have so much knowledge, students need to know how to find it. With AI in schools, digital literacy is more essential than ever. Students need to know how to fact-check AI responses and protect their personal data. Last week, we were told, yeah, please don't put valuable information there. But only like a few of us heard it, so like maybe 30, 50 people, not the entire school. So I think that's something that should be more discussed about. According to OpenAI, chats and uploaded content in Chat-GPT-AddU are not used to train their models. Everything is encrypted, a major difference from the free version.
