Orthodox Christians throughout Europe celebrated Epiphany, marking the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist, with a variety of local customs. In Greece and Turkey, swimmers competed to retrieve a wooden cross, while Bulgarians performed traditional dances in icy rivers and Romanians gathered for blessings and festive foods.

The holiday also signaled the end of the Vatican's 2025 Holy Year, with Pope Leo closing the Holy Door at St. Peter's Basilica after a year that saw millions of pilgrims visit Rome. These events highlight the blend of religious and secular traditions associated with Epiphany across different cultures.

They drank plum brandy and mulled wine and ate grilled spicy sausages to celebrate the feast. The holiday also marked the end of the Vatican's 2025 Holy Year, a year-long celebration that saw some 33 million pilgrims flock to Rome. After a prayer at the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Leo pulled the two doors shut, symbolically closing out the Jubilee.
