It will no longer introduce a racial vilification offence in an attempt to get the Coalition on board. It had been concerned about the impact on free speech, but the Executive Council of Australian Juries disappointed about the message it sends about the severity of racial hatred. How much more serious does it have to get before we understand that we need to tackle this problem at its heart? They would also understand that we need to get this right. Passing laws for the sake of passing laws is not a good response to what happened in Bondi. After repeatedly demanding Parliament be recalled, the Opposition risks being seen as hypocritical if it doesn't find a way to pass new laws. The tone today did seem more constructive, but will there be consensus internally? We did need to come back urgently, but on top of that the Government needed to get its job done properly. I say to Susan Lee, this is a day where she needs to unite her party and put Australians first.
