The Democratic Republic of Congo is grappling with a new outbreak of Ebola, as health officials have confirmed eleven additional cases in the Bulape Health Zone of Kasai Province.

The outbreak is currently limited to six health areas, with a total of over 57 cases and 35 deaths reported so far. Ten additional deaths have been reclassified as probable Ebola cases after patients were not tested. Among the cases, five are health workers, and children aged zero to nine years account for 23 percent of all cases. Only 400 initial doses of the Ebola vaccine have been dispatched, with further supplies expected. The response is hindered by limited access and funding. This marks the 16th Ebola outbreak in the country since 1976, caused by the Zaire species of the virus.

There are five confirmed cases among health workers. Cases range from zero to 65-year-old, with the age group zero to nine years being the most affected, accounting for 23 percent of the total cases. Only 400 initial doses of Ebola vaccine have been dispatched, with the remainder to be delivered later, according to the WHO. The operation has been hampered by limited access and scarce funds. The latest Ebola outbreak is Congo's 16th since 1976, and is caused by the Zaire species, named after the country's former name.
