Nigeria has taken possession of 119 Benin Bronzes returned by the Netherlands, following a prolonged campaign for their repatriation. These artifacts, originally created by artisans of the Benin Kingdom between the 13th and 18th centuries, were taken during the 1897 British raid on Benin City.

The Dutch Consul General in Lagos stated that the Netherlands has a policy to return artifacts clearly identified as stolen during colonial times. Four of the bronzes will be displayed at the National Museum in Lagos, while the rest will be stored at a new facility in Benin City. An official handover ceremony is scheduled to take place at the National Museum in Lagos.

If it's very clear that objects are stolen, taken under distress, then obviously we will return them to the rightful owner. The National Museum in Lagos will house four of the returned pieces, while the remainder will be stored at the new Oba Obon Ramwen storage facility at the National Museum in Benin City. An official handover ceremony will be held on June 21st at the National Museum in Lagos.
