This process must be completed before the government officially takes office, which is scheduled for July.

He obtained a convincing victory in November elections, but four months later Geert Wilders has recognised he's reached a political impasse. I can only become Prime Minister if all parties in the coalition support it. They didn't. I would like a right-wing cabinet, less asylum and immigration. The Dutch come first. My love for my country and voters is greater and more important than my own position. The Dutch parties, including Wilders' Freedom Party, have been in coalition talks for more than a hundred days, but so far they've borne no fruit. At the beginning of February, the centrist leader, Pieter Omtzigt, ruled out joining a majority cabinet led by Wilders. The Freedom Party manifesto calls for a ban on mosques, the Koran and the hijab. It also wants a binding referendum on the Netherlands leaving the European Union. However, Wilders was forced to drop these plans amid resistance from his potential allies. There are now reports the parties are looking at other options, like a cabinet made up of technocrats or a minority cabinet propped up by support from Omtzigt's party. Time is ticking though. Outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte is holding down the fort for now, but is widely expected to become the next head of NATO in October.

Prospects for a Gaza ceasefire appeared slim as Hamas reiterated its demand for an end to the war in exchange for the freeing of hostages, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu flatly ruled that out.
