A 31-year-old man from Trenton drowned in Seaside Heights after entering the ocean with his family following lifeguard hours. Four other family members were rescued and survived the incident. In response, Seaside Heights Mayor Tony Voss announced that beaches will now be cleared and gates closed about an hour after lifeguards leave, prioritizing public safety despite potential conflicts with beach access laws.

Officials also noted a language barrier with the family involved, who predominantly spoke Spanish. As a result, the mayor and police chief are considering installing warning signs in Spanish at all beach entrances and along the boardwalk to inform visitors about the dangers of rip currents and swimming after hours.

Well, some new information this afternoon on the drowning victim from Seaside Heights. We have learned that victim was a 31 year old man from Trenton. Four others were also rescued and survived. Our Jim Murdoch just spoke with the mayor and police chief about major changes coming to the beach after this and other incidents over the weekend. Jim, what else have you learned? Asia. Just a few minutes ago, Seaside Heights Mayor Tony Voss tells me he is done with people dying on this beach because they're going into the ocean after the lifeguards have gone home. That horrible tragedy yesterday, a family of five from Trenton went into the water. Only four of those family members survived. I don't want to address the emergency. Yeah, well, I see five. There's some kids that way out in the water. Boardwalk units are going on to Webster Beach reports of another water rescue going on. County is gonna be five people in the water right now. Webster Beach County updating you four out of five on store now. Sorry, we're gonna keep your going. This tragedy comes off the busy weekend where Seaside Heights Fire and Rescue responded to a dozen incidents in town and even more in surrounding areas all after hours because of the latest tragedy and so many other rescues. Mayor Tony Voss says they will be clearing the beaches about an hour after lifeguards go home and shutting the gates. He says he's aware of the public trust doctrine and beach access laws, which may cause conflict with his plan. But for now, he says he's putting safety first. I don't care who gets mad at me of closing the beach. If it's endangerment, I hate to say this soon. Mhm. Mayor Voss and Chief Tommy Boyd additionally said there was a language barrier with that family from Trenton. They predominantly spoke spanish. So now the mayor and the chief are looking into the possibility of putting warning signs up at all the beach entrances and along the boardwalk warning about the dangers of rip currents and what happens if you go in the ocean after hours.
