Efforts are underway to relocate court matters to other venues, though this is expected to be challenging due to the volume of cases typically handled at the Downing Centre. Planned upgrades to the facility, including renovations to public areas and courtrooms, will be completed during the shutdown.

Downing Centre to remain shut down for months

We're being told that everything is being done to minimise delays and disruptions, but of course the concern is that this major shutdown is going to have a significant impact on the judicial system and backlogs that already exist right across the state. Now, this problem goes back to a burst water main that happened in June. It caused significant damage both to the Downing Centre building but also to a substation that powers it. We're now being told it's going to take until late 2025 at least for that electrical damage to be fixed. Now, where possible, the matters listed here at the Downing Centre are being moved to other available courts, but when you think about just how much is heard and dealt with here at the Downing Centre, finding available time and space for those matters isn't going to be easy. If there is a silver lining to this all, it's that planned upgrades to the Downing Centre are being brought forward so that they'll now be completed whilst this shutdown occurs. That's upgrades and renovations both to public areas and to courtrooms. They're going to be completed in the next few months.
