International development aid is facing what experts call donor fatigue. Traditional donors, most notably the United States, are showing less commitment to global health initiatives. In an interview with Euronews, former European Commission president and current chair of the Vaccine Alliance Gavi, José Manuel Barroso, weighed in on the issue. It's true that there is some concern in the development community about the continued support to development in general and also in the field of public health. Having said that, I believe we are going to overcome that difficulty. Barroso says that the solution lies in rethinking how development aid is delivered, with a sharper focus on results. And if you want to be honest, you have to recognise that sometimes it's not done the best way. There are inefficiencies, there are many, many that sometimes is lost, including in the donor countries. And I think that this occasion where we see the difficulties that some of our donors have in getting the necessary support from their budgets, I think it's the ideal moment for us to look at what we can gain in terms of efficiency. Adding to the uncertainty is a perceived pullback by the United States, especially since the new Trump administration. It's not just about money. It's about expertise. It's about people on the ground. And the United States has been a great supporter of international development. So we hope that that commitment remains, not only the United States, all the countries. But funding isn't only under pressure across the Atlantic. In Europe, growing defence budgets spurred by shifting geopolitical realities are creating competition for limited public funds.
