Firefighters in Bedford, New York, responded to a fire at Northwind Kennels, rescuing approximately 20 dogs from the burning building. The operation was complicated by frigid temperatures, difficult access, and frightened animals, with some dogs biting rescuers during the evacuation.

The kennel's owner, Penelope Smith Burke, is facing five counts of animal cruelty related to a separate incident involving Bernese Mountain dogs. Investigators believe the fire began in a laundry room and are working to determine its exact cause.

Firefighters in Westchester braving the frigid conditions and temperatures to battle the flames at an animal shelter. Dogs inside the facility, they had to be rescued. News 12's Lisa Larocca has more from the scene in Bedford. A fire crews had a lot to deal with the location, the cold and about 20 very frightened dogs. Approximately 90 firefighters from Bedford and other departments raced to Northwind Kennels on Old Post Road just after 530 this morning. Fire officials say a caretaker noticed smoke and flames coming from one of the dog kennel buildings and called 911. It was fully occupied by dogs while a team was doing the extinguishment. We also had to manage getting the dogs out of their crates and into another building on the property. The approximately 20 dogs were understandably frightened and firefighters say some were biting as they were being rescued. Luckily, the thick fire gear worn by crews acted as a protective barrier. The bitter cold temperatures as well as the location of the building made it a tough fire to fight a very difficult driveway access for this building and unfortunately we're only able to get one apparatus up to the scene. Everybody else had to stay down on the street. Northwind Kennels has seen its share of troubles. Owner Penelope Smith Burke is facing five counts of animal cruelty. She's accused of denying critical medical care to five Bernice Mountain dogs. All had to be euthanized. Smith Burke has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Meanwhile, investigators say it looks as though this morning's fire started in a laundry room and investigators say they are now working to determine the exact cause of the fire were in Bedford Westchester County.
