Medical professionals and pharmacists have reiterated that Tylenol (acetaminophen) remains the safest pain medication for use during pregnancy. Dr. Brian Lee, an epidemiologist, referenced large-scale studies and the positions of leading medical organizations, stating there is no strong evidence linking acetaminophen use in pregnancy to increased risks of autism or ADHD in children.

Pharmacists also support Tylenol as the preferred analgesic for pregnant women, noting it is classified as a low-risk medication. Experts emphasize using the lowest effective dose for the shortest time possible and recommend consulting healthcare providers to weigh the risks and benefits of any medication during pregnancy.

I believe current recommendations at this point are lowest dose possible for the shortest time possible. And I don't think anything changes with any, you know, pronouncement by the government. Dr. Brian Lee is a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at Drexel University. If you ask the expert clinic, clinician bodies like the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology or any number of other expert sort of bodies, they've all reached the conclusion that there's no strong evidence to support that acetaminophen used during pregnancy increases risk of autism or ADHD. He spoke to journalists online Monday after President Trump's announcement at the White House linking pregnant women taking Tylenol to a heightened risk of autism in their children. Our study, as well as others that have done the same thing, find no evidence to support this possible association. Following 2.5 million pregnancies and their children for 20 years, it was a study Dr. Lee led in Sweden with results published in the Journal of American Medicine last year. The big elephant in the room for neurodevelopmental disorders is genetics. Dr. Lee, a new drug was mentioned today by the White House along with the benefits of folic acid. So, first of all, folic acid is an incredibly important nutrient that we know affects neurodevelopment. It's been 30 years plus since folic acid deficiencies were linked with neural tube defects. So the idea that folic acid is somehow important for neurodevelopment, that's not, no one is questioning that. The difficulty with promoting leucovorin at this time is that the existing evidence for leucovorin for treatment or alleviation of autism symptoms is remarkably premature. Meantime, at a local grocery store, and the pharmacist here says Tylenol is still likely the safest bet when it comes to taking a pain medication during pregnancy. It is by far the best option for pregnancy for analgesics out there from a pharmacological perspective. John Sorensen is the pharmacist at the Gunnison Market Pharmacy. I would recommend using the lowest source of possible effective for acetaminophen. It is still classified as a risk A in pregnancy, meaning it is one of the safer drugs we have out there in pregnancy. He says so many other options have proven health risks. We always have to adjust whether the risk outweigh the benefits for the treatment. Ultimately, health experts recommend talking to your doctor about the risks and benefits.
