CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta responded to public questions about whether common home water filters remove fluoride from tap water. He explained that most standard filters, such as those found in refrigerators, do not eliminate fluoride because it is a dissolved mineral. Only specific systems like reverse osmosis and distillation are effective at removing fluoride.

Dr. Gupta also noted that in the United States, fluoride levels in tap water are typically well below levels of concern for health. He advised that individuals worried about fluoride can contact their local water company for a consumer confidence report or consult the CDC's 'My Water Fluoride' resource to check fluoride levels in their area.

Do home water filters remove fluoride?

Fluoride has been in the news a lot lately, and a lot of you have been sending in questions. This has been one of the most common questions. Paula in West Springfield, Massachusetts is asking, In our household, we use filtered water coming out of the refrigerator. Does that eliminate the fluoride in the water? So the short answer, Paula, is no. Think about fluoride as a dissolved mineral, which makes it really hard to actually filter out. Most conventional filters aren't going to get rid of fluoride. Two types of filtration systems will. One is called reverse osmosis, where you're actually sort of forcing water through a membrane. And the other is distillation, where in essence you're sort of boiling the water and then collecting the water vapor. That's nearly 100% good at getting fluoride out of the water. But one thing to keep in mind as you think about this whole issue is that in the United States, most places, the water is simply not going to have enough fluoride to be concerning. It's about half the levels in most places in the United States before you get to a level of concern. If you are still worried about this, you can call your water company and ask about fluoride. They are required to give you something known as a consumer confidence report. You can also check out the CDC's website. There's a page that says My Water Fluoride. Look for your specific area. Find out how much fluoride is in your water. And hopefully that will relieve some of your concerns.
