The United Nations Secretary General has called for an end to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, citing a staggering human cost in Gaza. Reports indicate that Israel's expanded ground operations have left many Palestinians displaced, with widespread destruction and a severe shortage of food.

Local health officials and the Hamas-run Ministry of Health report that 600,000 people in Gaza are suffering from malnutrition, with soup kitchens running out of supplies and at least 15 deaths from malnutrition reported in a single day. The Israeli military states it is working to facilitate humanitarian aid, but the UN describes the situation as a 'horror show,' warning that starvation is affecting the entire population.

The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres today urged Israel and Hamas to bring an end to the war, saying the cost is staggering, measured in human lives, shattered communities, and lost futures. CBS's Haley Ott reports the humanitarian crisis has led to disturbing images of starvation in Gaza. What little these displaced Palestinians had left to call home, gone. After Israel expanded its ground operation in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Bala, leaving people to pick up the remains of their shattered lives. There's nothing left, Mohammed Abu Sultan says. Look, they're just bombing us. This part of Gaza had become an informal refuge for the displaced. No longer. And as Israel's military operations ramp up, hunger is at an all-time high. Soup kitchens are running out of food. 600,000 people are suffering from malnutrition, according to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health. Any hint of aid entering Gaza draws massive crowds, and along with them, chaos. Men, women, and children all trying to get flour. I got a bag, this teenager says. They know they're risking death searching for food. The UN says the Israeli military has killed over 1,000 Palestinians seeking aid since May. I'm speaking for everyone. If I had even a kilo of flour at home, I would have stayed home and not risk my life, this man says. We can't even stand on our feet anymore, Kala Abdel Al says. I swear, I'm walking and I'm starving. I just want a bag of flour, that's all I want. My daughters are dying of hunger. 15 people have died of malnutrition in Gaza in the last 24 hours, local health officials say. They expect those numbers will only rise. The IDF says the transfer of humanitarian aid into Gaza is of the utmost importance, and that it works to facilitate its entry in coordination with the international community. But today, the Secretary General of the United Nations described the situation in Gaza as a horror show, and said, quote, malnourishment is soaring, starvation is knocking on every door.
