President Trump said the day the government shutdown played a big role in Democrats' victories. Senior White House correspondent, Ed O'Keefe, breaks it down for us. President Trump admitted today his party took a beating in Tuesday night's elections. I don't think it was good for Republicans. I don't think it was good. I'm not sure it was good for anybody. It was exceptionally good for one of the president's newer targets, 34-year-old Zoran Mamdani. Hope is alive! Soon to become New York's first Muslim mayor who earned more votes than any mayoral candidate since 1969. New Yorkers are facing twin crises in this moment, an authoritarian administration and an affordability crisis. Mamdani's relentless focus on the cost of living and his savvy digital outreach. New Yorkers are being crushed by rent and child care. Energized younger voters and carried him to victory. And he's not beholden to the ultra-rich, he's beholden to us, the working class New Yorkers. His supporters hope it could be a model for Democrats nationwide. Be authentic and true to your values. Welcome to the transition. The self-described democratic socialist said today he's prepared to deal with the president. I will not mince my words when it comes to President Trump. I will continue to describe his actions as they are, and I will also always do so while leaving a door open to have that conversation. But Trump has threatened to cut funding to the city and deploy the National Guard, as he's done in other democratic-controlled cities. We lost a little bit of sovereignty last night in New York, but we'll take care of it, don't worry about it. The Big Apple turnover and power was just one of many for Democrats nationwide. In New Jersey and Virginia, newly elected moderate Democratic governors campaigned on the economy and tied opponents to Trump. You guys just screamed from the rooftops. In New Jersey, Mikey Sherrill won several counties that voted for the president last year, and heavily Latino areas that had also backed. Liberty alone is not enough if the government makes it impossible for you to feed your family, to get a good education, or to get a good job. In Virginia... We chose our commonwealth over chaos. Abigail Spanberger won a handful of counties that had voted for Trump by attacking his Doge spending cuts. And then there's California and its decisive approval of Governor Gavin Newsom's plan to redraw the congressional map in favor of Democrats, a direct response to Texas redrawing its boundaries at Trump's request. The redraw may face some legal challenges, but could give Democrats five more House seats after the midterms, which, guys, are only 363 days away. Who's counting? Oh, yeah.
