The Dee Why community is mourning the loss of well-known surfer Mercury Salacus after a fatal shark attack. In the aftermath, beaches at Dee Why and Long Reef remain closed, with lifeguards conducting aerial and sea patrols to ensure public safety. 

A separate shark sighting at Freshwater in Manly prompted the evacuation of swimmers and surfers, though the detected Great White is not believed to be the same animal responsible for the earlier attack. Authorities note that shark activity is common along the east coast during this time of year. The closures are being maintained both for safety and as a mark of respect for the community's loss.

A community still reeling from the loss of much-loved surfer, Mercury Salacus. I still haven't processed it, so it's hard to put into words how long the shockwave is going to be. Then today, another scare just down the road. Surfers and swimmers ordered out of the water at Freshwater in Manly after a shark was swimming nearby. You could hear them there on the PA system and a couple of weeks ago you probably might not have come in over that, but now it's taken a bit of a serious sort of turn. A bit more nervous than we used to be. The 2-metre Great White was detected by a smart drumline and isn't believed to be the same animal responsible for Saturday's attack. It's not unusual at this time of the year, especially between June and October, November, as white sharks move up the east coast of Australia for those tagged white sharks to ping on any of the 37 tagged listening stations. Two days on and D.Y. and Long Reef are still closed, although not everyone was deterred. Lifeguards continuing to scour the water from the sky and sea. Just being that eyes in the sky, getting the coverage that we need, making sure it's safe for the community to eventually open again. We did see a bait ball earlier this morning and the UAV pilot was able to relay that to the lifeguards on a jet ski and that jet ski was able to head over and separate the bait ball. As the D.Y. community comes to terms with this tragedy, the beach remains closed today, not just out of an abundance of caution, but also out of respect. There will be a lot of people holding back. I think a lot of people are just respectful in the way that I just think we just need to give it time. Hannah Taylor, 10 News.
