A South Korean student has died from cardiac arrest after being kidnapped and tortured by a criminal gang in Cambodia. 22-year-old Park Min-ho is just one victim of a scam network that's believed to have thousands of targets. As a citizen of South Korea, I felt an unbearable sense of outrage. After seeing the news for the first time, I felt deeply miserable about how our national dignity had been diminished. In response, on Wednesday, Seoul issued a travel ban to parts of Cambodia. Criminal networks are believed to lure victims to Cambodia with the promise of well-paid jobs. But on arrival, they're taken prisoner and forced to work on phishing scams. It is currently reported that around 200,000 people of various nationalities are working in Cambodia's scam industry, which targets victims worldwide, including in South Korea, through online scams. Cambodian authorities have arrested several suspects in the case, and are now widening their investigation. The investigation is being expanded to ascertain the original location where the crime was first committed, along with identifying any other related individuals, if they exist, through close cooperation with the South Korean embassy in Cambodia. On Tuesday, the United States and Britain imposed sanctions on parts of a Cambodian conglomerate, Prince Group, which they said was running scam networks worldwide, seizing US$15 billion in cryptocurrency. Cyber scams in Southeast Asia, including in Cambodia and Myanmar, are believed to be worth billions of dollars annually.
