A severe holiday storm has struck California, delivering record-breaking rainfall, flooding, and mudslides, particularly in Southern California. The storm has caused at least three deaths, widespread power outages, and evacuations, with some areas receiving over a foot of rain and significant snowfall in mountain regions. 

The weather system is moving eastward, bringing snow and hazardous travel conditions to the Midwest and Northeast, including New York City, which is expected to see its largest snowfall in over three years. The National Weather Service has warned of treacherous road conditions and over 700 flight cancellations have been reported, though some relief is forecast with drier weather expected soon in California.

California's Christmas present, not a good one. Mother Nature gifting a mix of rain, wind and snow from Southern California to Lake Tahoe, where some people may actually enjoy that. Take a look at Bear Valley, this ski area, getting 24 inches of fresh snow over the past 24 hours. Scripps News National Correspondent Katie Tubman has more on this storm and what's headed to the East Coast where she is. Katie, tell me what we're seeing. Well Jason, we're seeing wild weather coast to coast and it's impacting millions of Americans across the country. In California, a powerful atmospheric storm bringing record-breaking rainfall in dangerous conditions across the state. Now the Southern region in particular has been battered by rain and that rain is expected to continue before the storm moves out. And numerous locations in Southern California broke daily records for inches of rainfall on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, bringing the region its wettest Christmas in 54 years. Now, the storm system has triggered severe flooding, debris flow, mudslides, power outages and evacuations. At least two locations in the LA County saw more than a foot of rain. And east of Los Angeles in Wrightwood, California, a mountain community, a major mud and rock flow rammed homes and buried cars after getting nearly a foot of rain in 24 hours. Now at least three deaths have been attributed to the storm. The heaviest rain may be over but there is a continued flood threat for Southern California with more more rounds of rain lingering throughout today. But some relief is expected to be on the way hopefully soon. The National Weather Service predicting a drier weekend starting later today. So again, hopefully some relief for people who've who've just been battered by rain right now. Battered by rain and now you are about to be battered by snow. We're talking several inches, right? What are you expecting? That's right. We're expecting a messy weekend post Christmas travel for a lot of folks. New York City is expecting its biggest snowfall in more than three years during the next few days. And so we're set to see between four to eight inches of snow. We're seeing a powerful storm system moving across the Midwest toward the Northeast. So millions of Americans are bracing for snow and in some cases not just snow but a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain. The National Weather Service is warning against road conditions and saying that they will be quote treacherous for those traveling back after Christmas. And many flyers will also be facing challenges. I mean getting home won't be easy for them. So far as of today more than 700 flights, Jason, have been canceled. And so that's more than the previous three days combined. So a lot going out of this week and into the weekend but hopefully some good news for folks flying and some for driving and also just like getting through the weather. Jason?
