As President Donald Trump looks to make good on his promise to clean up the District, city crews moved in today to clear out homeless encampments and it's expected to ramp up very soon.

The district acted ahead of anticipated federal intervention, providing shelter options and storage for displaced individuals, while volunteers and activists offered additional support. Federal officers are expected to focus on encampments near the White House, and city officials estimate there are about 62 encampments on both district and federal property.

It comes as crews have begun clearing homeless camps across the city. This video captured near the Kennedy Center this morning showing construction equipment being used to remove tents. And this is all playing out while the mayor, Mayor Muriel Bowser, is away from the city. Sources saying that the mayor is in Martha's Vineyard. Her office says she's there to pick up her daughter and is expected to return tomorrow. Fox 5 has team coverage for you tonight. Homa Bash breaking down the new announcement from the chief of MPD. But we'll start with Sidney Persing live in northwest with the latest on the clearing of those homeless camps. Sidney. Yeah well we are hearing that federal officers could move into the district any minute now to start clearing out some of these homeless encampments. We're also told that they are very likely to begin with encampments closest to the White House. Right here this is Washington Circle less than a mile from the White House. As you can see not a lot happening right now but we were told earlier today by district officials and also some from some advocates that they expected the feds to move in here around 6 or 6 30 tonight and start to clean all of this up. As you mentioned earlier today an encampment was already cleared out just a few hours ago near the Kennedy Center. That though was done by the district not by the feds. Officials told us they knew the feds though would likely target that area so they essentially got ahead of it and just did it themselves. The district was there to offer shelters and storage to people and volunteers and activists were also there to help with other resources. Jesse Wall lived in that encampment and said despite it all he's appreciative for the support. I did not meet that woman until today and now she's getting me a hotel for it sounds like a couple days. They're going to make sure that my stuff gets into storage that needs to do. I'll be able to consolidate there at the hotel whatever else into a smaller place and not start over from scratch. White House officials have said if people don't comply and leave and either go to shelters, mental health facilities or elsewhere they could face fines or even jail time. Here's what D.C.'s deputy mayor for health and human services said about that. As a human being I'm always concerned if people who are living on the margin face circumstances that could traumatize them so yes I would not like to see in a situation where we have people who are homeless being marched to jail and I hope hope that that's not happening. And he said he believes there are about 62 encampments in D.C. on both district and federal property and that the feds have told him that they're not just trying to do this soon they're also trying to clear these out pretty quickly.
