A dangerous heat wave is expected in parts of the U.S. Las Vegas, Nevada, is already bracing for temperatures in the triple digits. CBS News' Andres Gutierrez reports.

A dangerous heat wave is affecting large areas of the United States, with Las Vegas experiencing temperatures expected to reach 110 degrees and Death Valley forecasted to hit 120 degrees. The National Weather Service has also confirmed tornadoes in Michigan and Missouri, with more storms anticipated in the Midwest. 

Emergency services in Southern Nevada have reported an uptick in heat-related calls since April, though the number is slightly lower than the previous year. Ambulance providers have increased their readiness by prepositioning 40 ambulances along the Las Vegas Strip to respond to potential heat illnesses, employing rapid cooling techniques to prevent serious health complications.

Turning now to that extreme weather threatening tens of millions of Americans today with both severe storms and dangerous heat. The National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes touched down in Michigan and Missouri and more storms are on the way in the Midwest. It comes as a place like Las Vegas is once again experiencing temperatures in the triple digits. The heat is also expected to move east. CBS News reporter Andreas Gutierrez joins us now from a sweltering Sin City this morning. Andreas, it doesn't look too bad, but tell me how you're feeling. Well, good morning, Vlad. Let me tell you, it's much better. It's actually pleasant than what it was 18 hours ago when I was talking to our good friend Elizabeth Cook on primetime. Back then, it was one hundred and nine degrees. Right now, a mild eighty seven degrees. Perfect timing for these folks to come out, these tour groups to get their shot of the famous. Welcome to Las. Fabulous. Las Vegas sign out here on the southern edge of the strip. Temperatures out here in Vegas expected to get up to one hundred and ten degrees once again today out at Death Valley, one hundred and twenty degrees. I did get a chance to talk to one of the largest ambulance providers out here in Southern Nevada who told me that they have started seeing heat related calls as early as April. And that's when the spring breakers came through to enjoy all the things that Las Vegas has to offer. So far, they have responded to about twenty five heat related calls since then. Compared to this time last year, they were at 40 calls, so a slight dip. But they know of how this weather can really get out of hand really quickly. And so they have prepositioned 40 ambulances. We see the height of these of the hot weather between four o'clock and eight o'clock in the evening. They put 40 ambulances along the resorts on the strip. And once they do encounter a patient that has heat signs of heat illness, they will go ahead and bring them into their ambulance, apply ice packs to three points in the body. And that's the neck, the armpits, as well as the groin area, which helps cool down the core temperature. Because if your core temperature gets hotter than one hundred and three degrees, it's very possible that your organs may end up shutting down. Back to you, Vlad. All right.
