'Dahomey' documentary wins top prize at Berlin film festival

The Golden Bear, for Best Film, goes to the movie Dahomey, by Mathie Diock. It's a film which documents the struggle to return the Benin bronzes to their rightful home in Africa, artefacts which had been pillaged by European colonisers as part of their oppression of the peoples of Western Africa. Dahomey's director told the audience in Berlin that restitution is about justice. The first time I imagined what restitution might look like in reality, I first heard a sound, a frequency, something trembling like an earthquake. It was the sign of a wall collapsing, the wall of silence. I stand in solidarity with Palestine. The struggles of the Palestinian people were the centrepiece of another film honoured at this year's festival. No other land highlights the plight of the residents of a particular village in the West Bank. This is Masafariyata, where Israeli bulldozers can regularly be seen at work in the community, destroying houses and thereby displacing people who are left with nothing. The film won Best Documentary in Berlin and was mostly put together by an Israeli and a Palestinian. I'm free to move where I want in this land. Basel is like millions of Palestinians locked in the occupied West Bank. This situation of apartheid between us, this inequality, it has to end. Leave your coat off, you'll feel the benefit later. Oppression of vulnerable young women in 20th century Ireland was the focus of small things like these, a movie which highlights the reality of one of the maudlin laundries, places supposedly designed by the Catholic Church to care for what were called fallen women, but which the Irish government later described as the nation's shame. One of the film's stars was honoured for Best Supporting Performance. I can't stand here without talking of the thousands and thousands of young women whose lives were devastated by the collusion between the Catholic Church and the state in Ireland.
