Cyclone Fina, classified as a severe Category 3 system, passed north of Darwin, Australia, causing extensive damage including uprooted trees, power outages affecting over 19,000 homes, and significant flooding with up to 430mm of rain in some areas. The cyclone was the most powerful to approach Darwin since Cyclone Tracy in 1974, with wind gusts exceeding 200km/h at the storm's center.

The Royal Darwin Hospital sustained damage when part of its ceiling collapsed, and emergency services received more than 500 calls for assistance. Despite the widespread destruction, authorities reported no injuries. The following morning, residents noted a rare swell along the coast, which was enjoyed by local surfers.

Howling past Darwin in the late afternoon... Oh, no! Oh, my God! Oh, my God! ..Fina made its mark. HEAVY RAIN Rain sent sideways, trees ripped from the ground. BLEEP! Holy bleep! Power lines torn apart in a shower of sparks, more than 19,000 homes plunged into darkness. Wild waves battered boats along the coastline and vessels that ran aground were left stranded, yet there were still some who ventured out. What the bleep? This driver among those who defied the warnings skidding across the bitumen as the storm unleashed its full might. The slow-moving system passed north of Darwin as a severe Category 3, the most powerful cyclone to approach the city since the devastating Tracy in 1974. A little bit scary, not as scary as Tracy. Records were toppled as up to 430mm of rain was dumped in some parts of the Top End. Although recorded gusts reach up to 109km an hour, in the centre of the storm, winds exceeded 200. The building was shaking and I was terrified. The hospital copped a battering. Engineers sent in to repair the roof. Royal Darwin Hospital last night had a 4x4m square area of its ceiling collapse. One part in a trail of destruction across the city with more than 500 calls for help made to the NT Emergency Service. I heard this all-mighty crash, bang. I ran out and the tree was just, yeah, landed on top of the roof and just missed my son's car. It's so terrible. There's debris everywhere. I think Tina has no message. No injuries have been reported and the power of the storm has many thankful the damage wasn't worse. And this morning, surfers enjoyed the rare swell. Yeah, we're just all keen, frothing, obviously being safe, but just getting out there. A silver lining after the storm. Hannah Taylor, 10 News.
