Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has launched an independent campaign for New York City mayor following his loss in the Democratic primary to Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani. Cuomo has shifted his campaign strategy, increasing public engagement and addressing his previous shortcomings in connecting with younger voters.

A recent poll conducted before Cuomo's independent bid showed Mamdani leading with 26 percent, Cuomo at 23 percent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa at 22 percent, with all three candidates within the margin of error. Meanwhile, Mamdani is working to secure endorsements from top Democrats in Washington, while Mayor Eric Adams is expected to receive backing from several law enforcement unions, though not the Police Benevolent Association.

Meanwhile, in the race for New York City Mayor, Democratic nominee Zoran Mamdani was in D.C. trying to get support from more top Democrats. All right, this is former Governor Andrew Cuomo's trying a different campaign style after losing in the primary. Antoine Lewis joins us now live from the newsroom with the latest on what's shaping up to be a very interesting race. Antoine. Very interesting indeed. Good evening to both of you. Now, the former governor putting a different foot forward after admitting to not having his best footing during last month's primary. He's engaging with the public more, taking reporter questions, and making the rounds at television stations. Cuomo, appearing on Good Day this morning, answering questions about his run for city hall as an independent after his surprising loss to Zoran Mamdani in the Democratic primary. A recent Harris Act survey of 585 registered voters before Cuomo announced his new campaign has Mamdani leading at 26 percent, Cuomo at 23, and Republican Curtis Lewa has 22 percent. Both Cuomo and Lewa are within the polls margin of error, meaning they are statistically tied with Mamdani. Mayor Eric Adams getting 13 percent. 15 percent, however, are undecided. Today on Good Day, the former governor addressing his inability to connect with younger New Yorkers, those who actually pushed Mamdani to victory. And frankly, I didn't do enough to reach out to the younger people. But at the same time, he articulates the problem, what's bothering them. But his solutions are rapid. There's no there, there. It's not as simple as saying everything is free, right? There is no free lunch, as they used to say. As for Mamdani, he was in D.C. today at a breakfast meeting organized by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Now, while Mamdani has gotten the support of many progressives, some top Democrats in Washington have yet to endorse his bid. Ocasio-Cortez says this was an opportunity for them to learn more about him and his policies. A lot of people just need to get to know folks before they issue an endorsement. It's just beautiful to have someone who is so authentic. You know, money cannot buy that. On tomorrow, Mayor Eric Adams is expected to get an endorsement from a coalition of law enforcement unions, the exception being the Influential Police Benevolent Association, the largest police union in the country.
