Denver7 has been tracking the fires all week on Colorado's Western Slope and here’s an update on each of the five wildfires as of Friday morning.

Fire crews in Colorado are responding to five active wildfires on the state's Western Slope, with the Cottonwood Flat fire in Garfield County burning at 311 acres and prompting evacuations within a one-mile radius. The largest blaze, the Turner Gulch fire, has reached just over 15,000 acres and is now 34% contained, while the Sobelly fire is at 16% containment and the Right Draw and South Rim fires remain uncontained.

No structures have been reported lost, and some highways previously closed have reopened. Authorities are also warning residents about the health risks of wildfire smoke, including increased risk of dementia, and recommend using high-efficiency air filters and N95 masks to reduce exposure.

Crews making progress on Colorado's five wildfires

Two wildfires now burning in Colorado this morning, bringing the total number of fires in our state to five. The Cottonwood flat fire in Garfield County is currently burning at 311 acres. It adds to the several other fires burning on the Western Slope that have prompted evacuations. Now this newest Cottonwood flat fires between Parachute and Rollison, just South of I-70 evacuations are happening within a one mile radius of that area and this morning we're starting to hear from some people in the area who are in the path of the fire. My daughter called and asked if we could take in one of her friends that got a mandatory evacuation, but it was pretty bad about an hour ago, and I know it's not even the beginning of the worst part of fire season, so I'm not looking forward to that. So far, we know that no structures have burned in Highway 6 was closed last night, but it is since reopened. As for the other fires that we've been updating you on all week long, crews have made some good progress on the biggest fire. The Turner Gulch fire that we've been referring at just over 15,000 acres. It is now 34% contained. The Sobelly fire is at 16% containment in the other two. The right draw and South Rim fires are both at 0% containment this morning. And if you were living near these fires, here's another reason to pay attention to the smoke this morning. I'm talking about the impact on our cognitive health. A decade long study of more than 1.2 million people showed an increased risk of dementia because of wildfire smoke exposure. I chatted with Jim Hurley he with the Alzheimer's Association. He told me wildfire smoke is particularly dangerous because it burns so hot and the concentration of toxic chemicals. I asked what do families who are living in this situation right now do, and he said he's been through it himself. So what I did was I went out and I bought one of these high efficiency furnace filters to at least help control the air that's coming into the house. After when I changed it, it was black. So I could see it was doing the job that my lungs didn't have to do. Early, he suggested using N95 masks and then limiting some time outside as well. And of course, researchers will be looking pretty closely at how much exposure results in that higher risk. But they did say that there is a correlation.
