For years, Keith battled stomach cancer, but he hit the stage performing throughout his treatments. Then, on Monday, the 62-year-old country music star died. On his website, a post says he was surrounded by family at the time of his passing, and went on to say, quote, he fought his fight with grace and courage. Tributes poured in on social media from fellow musicians like Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, and Bret Michaels. The Country Music Hall of Fame released a statement reading, Toby Keith was big, brash, and never bowed down or slowed down for anyone. The 6'4 country music cowboy born in Oklahoma worked in oil fields and played semi-professional football before he broke into the country music scene in the 90s. Over his decades-long career, 20 of his songs hit the top Billboard charts. In 2015, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Keith identified as politically independent, playing at events for presidents like George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump, who gave him the National Medal of Arts in 2021.
