Companies turn to robots to ease worker shortage

Robot dog Spot in dance mode. Now it's facing forward. When you turn it around and give it a push, it runs in the opposite direction. The robot dog from Boston Dynamics is programmed to use artificial intelligence to independently measure room temperature and noise levels and detect obstacles. I specifically applied here because I knew that I'd be working a lot with machines, especially in maintenance. That's what makes a mechanic a mechatronics engineer. The Hermes Group works in a very digitalized way here, but I didn't know that at first. That makes it all the more exciting and enjoyable for me. Another robot helps with individual shipments at the Hermes Group. Another robot helps with individual shipments at the Hermes Logistics Center, a model from the U.S. manufacturer Covariant. It sorts parcels containing items of clothing from various textile companies and sends them to the recipients. It's programmed with special software. So the covariant brain allows the robotic system to have eyes, to be able to see inside of one of these totes. And so what it does is the covariant brain takes a picture, and from that picture is able to understand what are in the totes. And so, for example, you can see here an outline of one of the t-shirts that's in this tote. And the covariant brain is able to identify that as an object that's in the tote. The Hermes Logistics Center in Haldensleben is one of the most modern in Europe. It covers an area the size of 26 football fields. Around 200 million parcels containing orders from fashion companies and home furnishings suppliers such as Otto Subsidiary Bonpre are processed here every year. It's fully automatic. That's possible as long as they have uniform sizes. It's more difficult with individual products and smaller consignments. These were previously sorted by hand. In the future, several robots will assume these tasks together with other machines. The Otto Group has already ordered a total of 100 robots for its logistics centers. At Otto Group, we do see the increasing challenge in the commercial logistics field. On one hand, it's about the shortage of skilled workers. On the other hand, we also want to provide the opportunity for our employees to upskill their profile and make logistic positions attractive. And how do the 3,600 employees see it? Many of them now have to retrain, from manual work to operating machines and correcting errors. The robot makes my work easier. It's there to help me, to support me. It checks the consignments and it packs them. And then they go on to dispatch. You're not afraid of losing your job? No, I'm not. We also have to check the computer, the robot, keep an eye on it. If there are errors, we also have to reset it. No, I'm not afraid. But as more and more robots are deployed, it remains to be seen whether all employees are ready to take on the new tasks. There will probably only be a few humans needed here in the future. Only for monitoring and to recharge the robot dogs when they return from their patrols. Because they do run out of juice from time to time.
