Columbia University is disciplining at least 70 students who participated in campus protests last year that were triggered by the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The university stated that these demonstrations, including one at Butler Library, disrupted academic activities for hundreds of students. According to a university source, 80% of those involved are facing suspension for a minimum of two years or expulsion. The actions follow federal pressure, with the Trump administration withholding $400 million in grants and accusing the university of not adequately addressing harassment of Jewish students. 

The university's judicial board conducted hearings and emphasized the importance of maintaining academic focus and upholding campus policies. Reactions to the disciplinary measures have been mixed, with some calling them excessive and others viewing them as necessary for accountability. Advocacy groups on both sides have voiced their perspectives, with Columbia for Palestine criticizing the university's response and pro-Israel advocates urging further restrictions on demonstrations.

Those protests, triggered by the conflict between Israel and Hamas, got nationwide attention. Now the university is going as far as expelling some of those students. Reporter Lisa Rosner has reaction from campus. Free Palestine! Columbia University says this demonstration at Butler Library in May affected hundreds of students attempting to study. A source from the university telling us 80% of the participants are being suspended for a minimum of two years or expelled. I think they're damaging property. They're, you know, several public safety officers got injured in the process. This is a good first step, there's a lot more to do. It comes as the university tries to work with the Trump administration, who is withholding $400 million in federal grants from the school, accusing it of continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students. To be suspended for two or three years, or even expelled because of a 25 minute demonstration in a reading room of a library, that just strikes me as draconian. It's wild that students who call that out and draw attention to major humanitarian crises are punished so severely. The school said students who participated in an encampment during alumni weekend of spring 2024 were also disciplined. The university judicial board held hearings and in a statement, the school said in part, our institution must focus on delivering on its academic mission for our community. Disruptions to academic activities are in violation of university policies and rules. Columbia for Palestine criticized the board and said in part on Instagram, the record demonstrates active collusion, not reluctant concessions. The trustees use the Trump administration as cover to escalate their Zionist agenda. Columbia is finally acting like an institution with a backbone. So I don't think this is about censorship, it's just about basic accountability. It's sad to say, but we've kind of gotten used to this. I definitely think the reason why students do this is because they think they can get away with it. The group Columbia for Palestine said online in part, the students will not be deterred. Meanwhile, pro-Israel advocates say the school needs to do more like setting time, place, and manner restrictions for demonstrations to make a difference.
