The cane sugar Coke is anticipated to cost between 5% and 15% more than the current version made with high fructose corn syrup. While some consumers perceive cane sugar as a healthier option, dietitians cite research showing little difference in health effects between the two sweeteners. The rollout may also impact agricultural sectors, with potential benefits for cane sugar producers and challenges for corn farmers.

The addition is set to hit shelves in the coming months after President Trump stated on Truth Social, it's just better. But what is the real difference between cane sugar and its current sweetener, high fructose corn syrup? FOX 13's Jennifer Veglis is cracking open the case. Gone are the days turning to your local Chipotle or Latin market for an ice-cold sugar cane sweetened Coke imported from Mexico. We get to ultimately vote and choose what we believe is best for ourselves and our families. Tuesday, in Coca-Cola's second quarterly report, the brand announced a new Coke product made with U.S. cane sugar is set to hit the shelves this fall. This comes after a push from President Trump, who is often seen drinking diet Coke with artificial sweeteners. He posted on Truth Social earlier this month. He had been in talks with the beverage company. Coca-Cola said it's designed to complement the company's strong portfolio. Ultimately, I think that the consumers are gonna have more choices. But will it cost more? Attorney and business analyst Parag Amin says most likely. Estimates for the increase in Coca-Cola costs for the new cane sugar version is estimated to be 5-15% higher. He says what's on the palette and in the wallet of consumers once it rolls out will ultimately decide which industries take a potential hit. Some farmers, for example, in the Midwest, where most of America's corn is grown, may lose out. And farmers in the Sunshine State may benefit. Having more jobs and more opportunities for people in the cane sugar industry. Consumers want a perceived healthier version. But is it really? Dana Wirt, director of dieticians at HCA Florida Brandon, says not by much, citing a study from the National Institute of Health. They measured a group of a little over 750 participants, and they looked at both the high fructose corn syrup and the cane sugar. Those participants consumed sodas with one of those sweeteners as 20% of their daily caloric intake and really found no measurable differences, she says.
