Measurements at the Rhone Glacier show significant ice loss over a short period, and experts link global warming to recent destructive glacier collapses, including one that caused extensive damage to an Alpine village. Scientists emphasize that reducing CO2 emissions could help slow the decline of these glaciers in the long term, urging immediate action.

Climate change eats at Switzerland's glaciers

In Switzerland, Swiss cheese is famous for its holes, but glaciers in the country are now apparently following suit. Chapman Bell explains what's going on. High in the Swiss Alps, majestic glaciers are taking on an unlikely appearance. Scientists say climate change seems to be eating away at them. It's the Swiss cheese that is getting more holes everywhere. And these holes are collapsing and it's not good for the glacier. The holes that resemble those in Swiss cheese are thought to be caused by air pockets in the ice. And as global warming accelerates, so does the thawing from inside. Experts feared this could add to the demise of the already receding rivers of ice. Measurements taken at Switzerland's Rhone Glacier show just how quickly they're melting. When we drilled this stake in the last September, the ice surface was somewhere up here where my hand is. And now this is already melted. Global warming is having other effects too. Experts believe it was at least part of the cause of last month's massive collapse at another Swiss glacier that wiped out an Alpine village, causing nearly $400 million worth of damage. Back on the Rhone, this scientist says there's at least one way to save or at least slow down the shrinking of these glaciers. Everybody can contribute on their own to reduce CO2 emissions as far as possible. He says while it won't help immediately, it could in the long term. But the time to act is now.
