Immaculate Conception Church in Akron, Ohio, has closed its doors after serving the community for 103 years. Parishioners and families who attended the final mass shared their memories and expressed sadness over the closure, citing the church’s significance in their lives for generations.

The Diocese of Cleveland attributed the closure to several years of financial deficit and low attendance, with Sunday masses dropping to 20–30 attendees. While Catholic Charities will continue some parish services, the church building is expected to be put up for sale.

I was baptized there, first Eucharist there, confirmation there, married there. And the reality that he'll never attend another mass here. The last one took place this past Sunday. It's sad, it's hard to comprehend that it's no longer there. Kelly Shankland and her mom, Rose Arp, also have a long history at Immaculate Conception. The parish that goes back 103 years. Here's a picture of Kelly on her confirmation day. It's just really sad, it's just, yeah, heartbreaking. You feel like you're losing a member of your family. While mom and daughter have not attended church here for several years, Rose recalls precious moments over 40 years when they were active. It was a part of our lives. My dad and my mom, it was like their second home. You know, my mom planted the flowers and took care of them. In a statement, the Diocese of Cleveland said Immaculate Conception has been operating in a deficit for the past several years, with very low attendance and little sacramental activity. As a result, the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland is reviewing options for the parish's future. Catholic Charities will maintain some of the parish's programs and services. Charles says that includes the Kenmore Free Store that helps families in need. They provide food, clothing, essentials, everyday things you need. Still, the loss of the bedrock of the parish, its church, hits hard. From what I understand, it'll eventually go up for sale. Parishioners, both past and present, feared this day would come, with families moving away and others not returning post-COVID. Averaging probably 20 to 30 people at a Mass on a Sunday. And before, in its heyday, it was hundreds. Hundreds. Charles says he'll go to another Catholic church for Mass, but it'll never be quite the same. But yeah, it was a beautiful church.
