China has announced an expansion of its visa-free travel policy, allowing citizens from 74 countries to visit for up to 30 days without a visa. The policy aims to boost tourism revenue and has already led to a significant increase in visitor numbers and spending compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Despite these changes, no African country has been granted visa-exempt status, even as China continues to strengthen its ties with the continent. The majority of countries benefiting from the new policy are from the Global North, leaving African nations excluded from the latest travel facilitation measures.

Starting July 16th, a total of 74 countries will be able to travel to China for 30 days without a visa. This really helps people to travel because visa is such a hustle, to apply always for the visa and to, I don't know, go through the process. And once you don't have all this process then you can just travel easier because there is also direct flights from Georgia to China and this really helps. And I always look for the flights that go to China so I can explore more and more because I know that one week or two weeks is not enough for China. The new rules are good news for the tourism industry. China has struggled to get visitor numbers back up after the country's severe shutdown during the Covid pandemic. This year, we're only halfway through and we've already matched our total revenue of 2024. Compared to the pre-pandemic period, we've seen a roughly 50% increase in terms of the number of travellers, the number of tour groups booked and overall spending. So we are quite optimistic. This visa policy has been extremely favourable for us and we hope these benefits will continue. With most tourists from the Global North now able to travel visa-free to China, no African country has been granted visa-exempt status, despite recent efforts by China to increase its presence in Africa.
