So when U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 50 percent tariff on copper imports starting August 1st, the news shook Chile, usually known more for its earthquakes. At the presidential palace, an attempt to calm jitters. So far, we've received only a general announcement. We're still awaiting details, an executive order that will explain the specifics. Visiting the El Teniente copper mine, left-wing President Gabriel Boric called for national unity in defense of Chile's copper industry. But Trump's announcement could not come at a more sensitive time, in the middle of an election campaign. Conservative opposition candidates are already trying to exploit the tariffs politically. We need Washington to make exemptions, and in order to obtain them, we need good relations with the U.S. But our government has gone out of its way to deteriorate them. He's referring to the government's staunch support for Palestine, and President Boric's participation earlier this week at the BRICS summit, a forum that Trump labels anti-American. But in the short term, the big loser could be the United States. Less than 11 percent of Chile's exports go to the U.S., while at least 60 percent of U.S. copper imports come from here. And while Trump says that his aim with the tariffs is to build a dominant American copper industry, that could take a very long time. Meanwhile, the U.S. needs copper for everything, from semiconductors to electronics to the weapons industry. Those that will be most affected will be the finer consumers and producers in the U.S. that use copper as an input. So that will raise the cost of living in the U.S. But in the long run, President Trump's trade war is expected to undermine economic growth globally, and no country, say experts, can escape that impact.
