The latest in a chain of atmospheric river events is heading for the Pacific Northwest, and heavy rain and high elevation snow will last into the weekend. Flood watches have been issued for major cities like Seattle and Salem, Oregon. Here's what the region can expect.

A surge of moisture from a chain of atmospheric rivers is expected to affect Western Washington, Oregon, and much of the Pacific Northwest through the weekend. The event will bring substantial rainfall, with rain falling even at higher elevations where snowfall is typically expected, including ski resorts.

Overnight temperatures at elevations around 5,000 feet are forecast to remain above freezing, further limiting snow accumulation. Flood watches have been issued for areas including Portland, Salem, the Willamette Valley, much of Western Washington, Western Montana, and northern Idaho.

So we get a huge surge of moisture. This will continue all the way through the weekend for Western Washington, Oregon and much of the Pacific Northwest. Even here in the northern Rockies, notice there's much less snowfall than there is rain, so rain even into the higher elevations. Even at ski resorts were going to have a hard time making new snow. I was taking a look at some of the overnight lows even at higher elevations, like at 5000 feet were still above freezing at night. Alright flood watches are up for Portland, Salem down through the Willamette Valley. And then across much of Western Washington. Also there in the Western Montana in northern Idaho.
