The week culminates in a festival weekend with guest speakers from the Bay Area space industry, including NASA representatives and an astronaut meet-and-greet. Additional events include a space-themed costume party. Ticket prices vary, with discounts for members and EBT cardholders.

Welcome back. Happening this week, the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland is offering something new, a week of special programming that they're calling Space Week. Kids and families are invited to see what it takes to train to be an astronaut or modify a rover for different types of terrain. I spoke with the center's director of exhibits, Tracy Corrado, to learn all about it. For families with kids six to 12, we're activating the center in different ways, doing astronaut training for those groups and we've developed different activities throughout the center where people can test their skills as if they were training to get ready to go to space. We have rocket launches with paper rockets. We have different skill building activities. We have a story time and essentially the idea is that families will be getting, families and groups will be getting a mission log and they could collect different stamps by doing challenges like building rovers and they can collect prizes as they gather all of those. We have a new rover activity where we have, you know, these troughs of different terrain that represent different, you know, terrain of other planets and we invite visitors to modify the wheels of the rover so that the rover can work differently on different terrains. We also have, we've created our astronaut training where people can, you know, test some of their agility skills by jumping. They can see how high they would jump on earth and how high they would jump on the moon. There's a habitat building activity that's really a kind of creative, like imagine a, you know, space fort of a kid's dream where people can add to our large scale fort and build, you know, their habitat for living on another planet. We are also ending it with our grand festival weekend where we are activating the entire center with speakers from the Bay Area in the space industry. So we're going to have representatives from NASA. You could also come and meet an astronaut on Sunday, whether it's launches, whether it's astronauts, whether it's discoveries, just really seeing the excitement around that. We wanted to create this end of summer type of celebration to draw in visitors and really give them something new and special to end the summer. Well, the Chabot Space and Science Center's space week starts on Wednesday, July 30th. It runs through August 3rd. Tickets for their Wednesday through Friday program are $24 for adults, $19 for kids. It is free for members on those days. And if you're an EBT cardholder, admission is just $1. Members do have to pay half price for their Saturday, Sunday festival programming. Chabot also has a first Friday event, a futuristic space themed costume party for all ages. That's the evening of August 1st. Tickets to that event are just $10.
