The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), following recommendations from the Trump administration and the Department of Health and Human Services, has reduced the number of diseases for which vaccines are routinely recommended for children from 17 to 11. Vaccines for diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella, polio, chickenpox, and others remain recommended for all children, while others like RSV, hepatitis A and B, meningococcus, influenza, and COVID are now recommended only for high-risk groups or through shared decision-making with healthcare providers.

The changes take effect immediately, with all vaccines still covered by insurance at this time. However, there may be future changes to federally funded programs that provide vaccines for free. Health experts have expressed concerns about the potential risks of reducing vaccine coverage for certain diseases, particularly for infants and young children.

There's a big change that parents need to know about. The Trump administration is now cutting the number of recommended vaccines for children. Dr. Celine Gounders, editor-at-large for Public Health at KFF Health News and is here to sort it all out for us. Celine, good to have you here. So let's talk about what's recommended, what's been cut, and why do you think this is happening? Sure. So we've seen a recommendation from the Trump administration, from HHS, to reduce the number of infections against which vaccines are recommended. So it used to be 17 different diseases. Now we're down to 11. The ones that are recommended still for all children are MMR, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, chickenpox, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, HIB, human papillomavirus, or HPV, and pneumococcus, which is a kind of bacterial pneumonia. So those are still for everybody right now. There are changes to RSV. What should parents know about that? So RSV, this one's a little confusing because they're saying that, essentially, that not all infants under the age of eight are considered high risk anymore, that they're only defining high risk as having maybe a heart condition or a lung condition. Historically, healthcare providers have considered all infants under the age of eight months to be very high risk as they enter the RSV season. RSV continues to be the number one cause of hospitalization among infants. You talked about the vaccines that were recommended. What are the vaccines that are cut? Right. So this is really confusing, honestly. And you have the same recommendation for everybody. That's a lot clearer. So now you have two other groups that they're defining. So there's, quote, high risk. And then there's, quote, shared decision making, which is essentially opt-in or making the decision with your clinician. So those include the RSV that we just talked about, hepatitis A and B, meningococcus, which is a kind of bacterial meningitis, influenza, and COVID. Anything concern you about those that have been cut? Well, these, you know, RSVs, like I mentioned, is a leading cause of hospitalization. If a child gets hepatitis B, an infant or a baby gets hepatitis B, that can lead to lifelong infection, which puts you at risk for liver disease, cirrhosis, liver cancer, needing a liver transplant. These are not benign infections. So those at home are probably thinking, when is this going to take effect and how will this impact my insurance company? Takes effect immediately. For now, all of the vaccines remain covered by insurance, but federally funded programs where the vaccines are provided for free, that may change in the longer term.
