The Western Australia Supreme Court has sentenced Jack Brearley and Brodie Palmer to life in prison for the murder of Cassius Turvey, a 15-year-old boy who was fatally beaten in Perth. A third man, Mitchell Forth, was convicted of manslaughter and received a 12-year sentence. The court found that Cassius was chased and attacked with a metal pole in a violent incident unrelated to him, and died in hospital 10 days later.

Justice Peter Quinlan noted that while the attack was not racially motivated, racial slurs were used against Cassius and other children, contributing to the perception that the attack was racially charged. The sentencing has drawn national attention, with Cassius's family and community expressing grief and outrage over the loss of a promising young life.

The schoolboy died in hospital 10 days later. His death sparking outcry across the country. During sentencing today Justice Peter Quinlan told the WA Supreme Court like his famous namesake Cassius Clay, the teenager showed great promise from a young age but unlike his namesake Cassius will never be able to fulfill the great promise he showed in his 15 years of life. The court told the evidence overwhelmingly established Jack Brearley was the one who attacked Cassius with the trolley pole. The only reason he was killed was because he was the person Brearley happened to catch. Cassius's mother Michelle sobbed in court as Brearley's sentence was handed down. Justice Peter Quinlan said while the attack wasn't racially motivated the group did use racial slurs against Cassius and the other children and it was no surprise they thought they were being attacked because they were Aboriginal.
