Researchers from NOAA, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and UC San Diego observed that carbon dioxide, a heat-trapping gas, has increased at an accelerated rate this year, reaching levels unprecedented in human history. The rise in CO2 has been sustained over the past two years.

Climate scientists attribute the increase in carbon dioxide to human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels. This greenhouse gas traps heat in the atmosphere, causing global temperatures to rise, with approximately 90% of the extra heat being absorbed by the oceans. The year 2023 has been recorded as the hottest year to date.

The additional atmospheric heat is linked to more extreme weather events such as intense heatwaves, flooding, stronger hurricanes, droughts, and wildfires. Addressing the issue of climate change requires tackling carbon emissions, and scientists emphasize that the United States must take a leading role in reducing emissions and developing sustainable energy solutions globally.

What is really surprising to me is the fact that we have a major increase in the level of CO2 in the atmosphere, not just in one year, but rather two years in a row of sustained large increases. Climate scientists say humans are to blame for rising carbon dioxide, which is released by burning fossil fuels. CO2 and other gases trap heat in the atmosphere like a blanket, driving global temperatures higher with about 90% of that heat absorbed in the oceans. We are not only in danger, we are the danger. 2023 was the hottest year on record. Climate scientists say the extra heat in the atmosphere is already leading to more extreme heat waves, flooding, more powerful hurricanes, droughts, and wildfires. Tackling a warming planet, say scientists, means tackling carbon emissions. The United States has to lead the world in addressing global climate change and in order to do that we have to reduce our emissions and come up with new ways to provide electricity to more and more people around the world.
