A 15-month-old boy was left sleeping in a cardboard box after a thief stole his mother's car in Shepparton, Victoria. The incident occurred when the mother briefly left her car running with the air conditioner on while she went inside a store. The suspect removed the child from the car, placed him in a box, and drove away with the vehicle. 

The car was later found abandoned with a smashed windscreen, but the suspect has not been identified. Police have appealed for public assistance and described the suspect as a man aged 20 to 30 years, approximately 165 cm tall. The mother and local community remain shaken by the incident, which has also sparked debate about leaving children unattended in vehicles.

It happened in a matter of moments. A callous thief dumped a sleeping 15-month-old boy in a cardboard box and stole his mother's car. Why would you even do that? Like, that's, like, who knows? Somebody may not have found that child. Oh my God, she probably started freaking out or having panic attacks. That's so sad. She was parked behind Fresh Foods in Shepparton. With the car running and the air conditioner on, she went inside. That's when police say this man walked past. He's then identified a human being in the back seat of the car and had so little regard for that human being that it was so important to steal the car that he put the human being in the box and left them unattended in the car park. Moments later, the mother returned and after a frantic few seconds, she discovered her son in a box. He slept through the ordeal, but police say it could have ended in tragedy. It's sad that he's in a mind state that stealing the car was his priority. The car was recovered the next day in Maroopna Parkland. Its windscreen smashed, but there were no signs of the suspect. The ordeal shocking other mums returning to the shopping complex today. The scariest thought, I think, for me as a parent, is your child being taken. I honestly couldn't even think about how I would feel in that moment. There's been significant backlash on social media condemning the mother for leaving her son in the car. Police say while it's a practice they've repeatedly warned against, this mother simply made a split second decision that will now haunt her for the rest of her life. She's a beautiful mother, it's a beautiful family. She's completely aware that she's made an error in judgement. Police are appealing for help to identify the suspect aged between 20 to 30 years and approximately 165 centimetres tall.
