Campers on Moreton Island have been evacuated and nearby residents told to prepare to leave as a large out-of-control bushfire burns in the island's north.
The fire broke out in dense national park land around the Bush Camping Track.

A significant fire is burning on Moreton Island, Queensland, particularly around Blue Lagoon in the island's northern half. Authorities have issued a prepare to leave warning for areas north of the Tangalooma resort, prompting the evacuation of dozens of campers from the ocean side to the bay side townships of Bulwer and Cowen Cowen. 

Fire crews, including at least 13 teams on the ground and additional resources en route, are working to contain the flames, supported by fixed-wing aircraft and water bombers. The warning remains in place as the fire continues to burn during a period of high visitor numbers due to school holidays and amid a total fire ban.

Yeah well Chris there are around 50 fires burning across Queensland tonight but it's this fire on Moreton Island that right now is of most concern. It's burning around Blue Lagoon on the northern half there and it sparked a prepare to leave warning for the northern half of the island, essentially anything north of the Tangalooma resort. We know dozens of campers who were camping on the western side of the island, on the ocean side rather, have been evacuated by authorities to the bay side of the island, to the townships of Bulwer and to Cowencown because these flames they are at the moment virtually unstoppable. Of course fire crews have had to be taken across Moreton Bay this afternoon to help contain these flames. We know at least 13 crews are on the ground there now, another dozen are on their way as well as fixed wing aircraft and water bombers that prepare to leave warning. It was issued around lunchtime but it does remain in place and Chris of course Moreton Island would be absolutely teeming with school holiday campers here. The September school holidays are one of the best times to see Moreton Island, certainly one of the busiest. It also comes in the middle of a total fire ban so we'll have to wait and see just how long it takes to bring this fire under control. Chris.
