Issa Chiroma Bakari, a leading opposition figure in Cameroon, has stated he will not accept the results of the recent presidential election, in which incumbent Paul Biya was declared the winner with just over 53 percent of the vote. Chiroma accused state institutions of manipulating the outcome and called on his supporters to remain mobilized.

Following the announcement, protests erupted in Douala, Cameroon's economic capital, leading to at least 23 deaths as security forces responded to demonstrators. Civil society group Stand Up for Cameroon reported these casualties, while Biya, at 92 years old, continues his rule of more than four decades.

Chiroma also called on his supporters to stay mobilised, telling them they have a unique opportunity to say enough is enough. Protesters were out in force on Monday in the country's economic capital Douala after Cameroon's constitutional council declared victory for Biya with just over 53 per cent of the vote. At 92, Biya is the world's oldest leader and has ruled Cameroon for more than 40 years.
