They are hoping for peace. Cambodians have lived through ceasefires before. They've also lived through watching them collapse. Here in the displacement camps, a fragile calm is prompting some families to return to their towns and villages. Others are staying put, choosing hardship over fear. Under canvas roofs, generations share the same space. Children here don't understand this conflict. Too young to grasp politics, borders or disputed temples. But old enough to feel its consequences. Mom Saras and her family are taking the risk of going home. Several days have passed without a major incident. They gather what little they have and set off. Home is modest, but it's theirs. And it's not a camp. I came home to organise some belongings, but only temporarily because I'm still worried they may start firing again. If the situation is not good, I will go back to the camp. Across Cambodia's border regions, displacement camps are scattered for kilometres. All these people need aid. And some have no choice but to remain. Their villages now under Thai military control. What follows is a desperate wait. For food, for supplies, for a brief chance to check on homes before returning to camps once more. In some places, entire villages stand empty. Streets abandoned. Doors locked. Lives paused. How can I trust? Just one artillery shell could destroy our house. I'm scared. My family members are disabled and we have an infant. Her fear is grounded in experience. The family narrowly escaped when an artillery strike destroyed their neighbour's home. Thailand accuses Cambodia of breaching the ceasefire by launching airstrikes. Cambodia denies that. Cambodian soldiers meant to be released at the end of the 72-hour truce remain in detention. The calm, for now, is uneasy. The ceasefire could quickly unravel.
