It's been a horror month on NSW worksites. A young cleaner was killed in a gas leak at a Riverston restaurant last week. A truck driver is dead after being hit by a forklift in Mattreville on Monday. And yesterday, a fatal warehouse incident at Heatherbrae. Unfortunately, these types of incidents happen all the time. They shouldn't. No workplace should be a place where someone is injured or unfortunately dies. Which makes the timing of this safety training all the more critical. 10 News give an exclusive access to a meeting of more than 300 health and safety reps, often the eyes and ears in raising risks. We need to all be on the same page that we have to take safety very seriously and each of us have a responsibility but we all need to lift our game. While falls from heights remains the greatest cause of injuries, retail abuse is also in the spotlight, so too psychosocial risks such as bullying and harassment. We're recruiting an additional 20 dedicated psychosocial inspectors, so people with that expertise. So we're much more in prevention than addressing something after it's happened. The backdrop to all this is a political fight over workers' compensation, particularly psychological injury payouts. The Minsk government is battling to pass reforms it says are needed as the system struggles with a rise in claims. On today's training though, there is bipartisan support. The opposition's approach has always been the best time to stop psychosocial injuries is at the beginning rather than at the end. Prevention the priority, no matter the job.
