Thousands of families in southeastern Wisconsin are recovering from severe flooding, with local organizations reporting a dramatic rise in requests for help. Impact 211, a crisis call center, has seen daily calls increase from around 500 to up to 3,000, as many residents lack flood or homeowner's insurance and are unable to replace lost belongings.

The American Red Cross of Wisconsin is distributing cleanup kits, providing shelter, and offering disaster mental health support. Over 7,300 cleanup kits have been delivered to more than 1,600 households. Officials emphasize the importance of reporting damages to enable potential state or federal aid, and the Red Cross is seeking additional volunteers to assist with ongoing relief efforts.

Calls for help surge after historic southeastern Wisconsin floods

Thousands of families across SE Wisconsin are still recovering from last week's historic floods. I'm Meryl Hubbard in West Allis seeing what the response effort has been like for organizations like the American Red Cross of Wisconsin and Impact 211. Most of the folks that are calling are people that can't afford a flood, not that anybody can, but they don't have homeowner's insurance or flood insurance and they don't have a means to replace the items that they're losing. Impact 211 is a 24-7, 365-day crisis call center. President and CEO of Impact, John Hyatt, says they're used to getting about 500 calls a day for anything related to issues of housing, food, or mental health. But with the floods, they have been getting 2,000 to 3,000 calls every day over the last week. That's what's most surprising to me, not that there was originally this just sort of onslaught of calls, but it just hasn't let up. Again, we've got as many people who are answering the phone as we can. Impact works with the American Red Cross of Wisconsin to help serve those in need. Jennifer Warren with the Red Cross says they are giving out cleanup kits, have shelters open, and have disaster mental health volunteers at the ready. Having somebody that you know that you can talk with and that will just listen and try and best support you, I think that's huge. So far, Red Cross has been able to deliver 7,300 disaster cleanup kits to more than 1,600 households. Getting these kinds of resources starts with asking for help. This is about the community. It's about you and the community. And if there's a chance at all that the community and that individuals are going to get any financial assistance from the state or federal government, these damage reports are really critical to that effort.
