California has been on the front line of the global climate crisis as fires and record drought have ravaged the Golden State. But there is hope. It has emerged as a leader in climate policy. 60% of its power now comes from clean energy sources, including from the sun. Helped by generous tax incentives, a growing number of Californians are now using Tesla batteries and solar panels to power their homes. Our solar power fuels everything that we need in the house, including our spa, our refrigerator, our air conditioning unit. The wonderful thing is that now we get the bill and sometimes it's a negative number. The state has also banned oil pumps and drilling near schools and parks, a problem that has long plagued low-income communities. But California's boldest move could be the outlawing of fossil fuel-powered cars by 2035. There are close to 14,000 EV charging stations in the state, the most in the world. Officials hope that this will help the state reach its goal of carbon neutrality by 2045. So we have, again, something like almost 40 million people in California and at least that many cars, some old junkers as well, out there. So cutting the emissions from those cars would be the biggest step towards reaching these goals. California was front and center at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai.
