A wildfire known as the Canyon Fire has rapidly expanded in Castaic, California, burning nearly 5,000 acres. The fire began as a 50-acre brush fire and quickly grew, threatening nearby communities and prompting evacuation orders for approximately 4,200 residents. Fire crews have mounted an aggressive response both on the ground and from the air, successfully protecting a local high school from the flames. Despite these efforts, the fire remains uncontained, and about 1,000 structures are at risk if the fire continues to spread. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, especially as hot and dry weather conditions are expected to persist.

California Canyon Fire spreads

All right, it looks like we've got Andres Gutierrez in Castaic, California on the ground there. Andres, can you tell us what the situation is with the wildfires right now? Yeah, Michael, sorry about the technical difficulties. So essentially, this was a brush fire that broke out on one of the most hottest days here in Southern California. The Canyon Fire essentially broke out at 50 acres within two hours, burned more than 1,000 acres. And at this point this morning, it stands to nearly 5,000 acres that it has burned. Overnight, crews did mount an aggressive attack from the air and on the ground that they were able to save a nearby high school. Right now, it is continuing to spread east into Los Angeles County. The 5 Freeway, which is a merger thoroughfare to Northern California, is in the path of the fire. But right now it remains open. However, crews are obviously monitoring that. This fire is still not contained. They have deployed 400 crews that are on the ground and in the air battling this fire. There are also about 4,200 residents who are currently under evacuation order. Within that evacuation zone, about 1,000 structures are at threat if this fire were to continue spreading. We spoke to one of those evacuees, and here's what he told us. We're a little bit surrounded by, you know, quite a few other homes, but that doesn't seem to matter anymore. These fires get going and they can get through there pretty quick. When we can see it coming, we're out of here. And so we were here at the beginning of the year covering the Hughes Fire. That fire, along with what happened in the Pacific Palisades and in Altadena, has essentially served as a warning to a lot of these folks to heed these evacuation warnings and orders seriously. Firefighters out here are expecting yet another day of hot temperatures as well as extremely dry conditions. All right, Andres Gutierrez in Kistaik, thanks so much for joining us.
