Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has retained its position as the busiest airport in the world, handling approximately 108 million passengers in 2024. Despite this, the airport, along with others such as Los Angeles and Paris Charles de Gaulle, has not yet reached the passenger volumes seen before the pandemic, with Atlanta still down about 2.2 percent from 2019.

In contrast, some airports have experienced significant growth, with Istanbul processing 53 percent more passengers than in 2019. Global air travel reached 9.4 billion passengers in 2024, and forecasts suggest this number will rise to 9.9 billion in the following year. Expansion projects are underway in several regions, particularly in Asia Pacific, to accommodate expected future growth.

People that follow these statistics won't be surprised to see that Hartsfield-Jackson, Atlanta International Airport, once again the world's busiest airport in the world. This is Delta Airlines' largest hub, processing around 108 million people in 2024. This is followed by Dubai International Airport, Dallas-Fort Worth, Tokyo-Haneda, and London's Heathrow Airport. Now this is in terms of total passengers. Airports Council International also separately ranking airports that process the most international travelers. Of course, these folks require a bit more work. This year, we see Dubai jumping into the number one spot, all 92.3 million of its passengers deemed international, followed by London, Incheon, and South Korea, Singapore's Changi Airport, and Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. Now this was a record-breaking year for many airports, as it was for global air travel as a whole, some 9.4 billion people taking to the skies in 2024. But make no mistake, just because an airport is listed on this ranking does not mean it's returned to pre-pandemic levels. Most notably, Beijing's Capital International Airport, still down about 33 percent in terms of passengers. It was ranked 16th busiest airport in 2024, but it was number two back in 2019. Those that also haven't returned to full capacity, well, that's LAX, Charles de Gaulle in Paris, and even that number one, Hartsfield, Jackson in Atlanta, still down about 2.2 percent. But some airports busier than ever. This includes Delhi, Denver, Dallas, and Dubai, but none seeing more passengers compared to pre-pandemic than Istanbul, processing about 53 percent more people last year than in 2019. It's back to you. Yeah, for international passengers, I knew that South Korea will come up on the list there, but talk to us about demand this year. Is 2025 expected to be another record-setting year for air travelers? It is indeed, Sherry. So last year, 9.4 billion people flying. This year, officials expecting this to rise to about 9.9 billion. Now, this could seem like a big jump, but if we look to 2040, we're expecting air passengers to double. It's hard to even wrap your mind around that. I know it is for me, but if we look back to 1945, only 9 million people flying then. So we can see these numbers can ramp up rather quickly through the decades. This is also why we're seeing so much expansion, new airports, new runways, new terminals, especially here in Asia Pacific, where a lot of this growth is coming from. Now, I think the best example we can turn to is to look to Dubai International Airport. Last year, 92 million people passing through that airport. It has the capacity to take 125, but officials there seeing the writing on the wall saying we will quickly outgrow this. Last year announcing all operations will shift over to Dubai World Central around 2032. This airport said to process around 260 when it's all said and done with the expansions. This will be airports like we've never seen before.
