A record number of Americans are expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend, with many hitting theme parks and landmarks. This out-of-the-way spot, just a few miles from LA but far off the beaten path, is one of them.

A remote bridge in the Angeles National Forest, known as the 'Bridge to Nowhere,' has become a popular destination for hikers and thrill-seekers. Groups traverse challenging terrain, crossing rivers and navigating cliffs, to reach the bridge, where many participate in bungee jumping.

The bridge, originally constructed in the 1930s as part of a road project, survived a devastating flood that destroyed much of the surrounding infrastructure. Now privately owned, it is the site of regular bungee jumping events, attracting hundreds of thousands over the years. The location offers visitors both a sense of adventure and a connection to local history.

'Bridge to Nowhere' draws hikers, thrill-seekers

There's a lot of twists and turns in this canyon, a lot of forks in the trail. It was a warning and a metaphor as three dozen people gathered just after sunrise, took off on foot over rocks, hovering on the edge of cliffs and trudging across a river six times. We need to keep up and close the gap. Betty Gomez first made this trek 20 years ago. For Daniel Johnson, it's his first time. I like to sing if my heart can take it and also like if my body can take it. But it's not just a two-hour tour this crowd came for. For as they led each other five miles up a mountain, they then followed each other off a bridge. It's the adrenaline, you know, the sense of accomplishment after you do everything. Matt Sanchez is a regular. His girlfriend is not. I'm excited. I'm an adrenaline junkie. So she jumped. As did Johnson. It was amazing. Honestly, it was a really good experience just being able to jump. The love of bungee jumping is kind of the fabric of my soul. Ron Jones owns Bungee America and this bridge which sits literally in the middle of nowhere. How does a bridge end up in the middle of the Angeles National Forest? This road has a great history. One that predates cars at all. This is a gold mining claim that dates back to 1897, but it's how the west was settled back in the 1800s. 50 acres granted to a family, then partially taken back to build a road in the 1930s. Five bridges went up before the rains fell. It destroyed dams, roads and bridges all over the county. It washed away this canyon. More than a hundred people died in the Los Angeles flood of 1938. 5,000 buildings were destroyed and every bridge on this to be canyon road, except this one. The bridge is so tall the water passed underneath it. It was unscathed. But the project was abandoned, as was the bridge. And then in 1989, you said, let's jump off of it. Correct. We were looking for a bridge. He first rented the bridge for his new company and 20 years later he bought it and all 50 acres. And that is the best metaphor for life right there because there's no sort of bungee jump. It's in your face. You either jump or you don't. In 35 years, hundreds of thousands of people jumped. When you're standing up there and you're looking over the edge and you're about to make that jump, you're letting go of all that fear. You're letting go of all that stuff. You're just kind of like jumping into it. Johnson did it for his birthday, Jessica Potter for a commitment. I know it's pretty crazy to jump off a bridge, but would you want to do something even crazier and spend the rest of your life with me? As everyone came to simply let go, conquer their fears and fly for together on this bridge, they were far from nowhere. Get out of there! Get out of there!
