Topics included the Justice Department's handling of the Epstein files, the deployment of National Guard troops to various cities, and the hiring of individuals involved in the January 6 events.

Bondi declined to discuss internal conversations with the White House regarding the deployment of National Guard units, leading to a heated exchange with Senator Dick Durbin. She also addressed an investigation into alleged payments to a White House official, stating that the case was closed and no credible evidence of wrongdoing was found. The hearing remains ongoing.

Breaking down Pam Bondi's Senate testimony

Attorney General Pam Bondi has spent the last few hours fielding questions from members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. It's been a tense and confrontational hearing between Bondi and Democratic senators so far. CBS News correspondent Chanel Call has been listening in. Chanel, thank you so much for joining us today. Why is this hearing happening and what have you heard so far? Well hey Mooka, good to see you. So this is an annual Justice Oversight Committee meeting but it comes after former FBI Director James Comey was indicted by a federal grand jury. So some Democratic lawmakers now accusing the Justice Department of sort of going after people that are perceived to be enemies of President Donald Trump. Attorney General Pamela Bondi who you see here today facing some questions about her wide about a wide swath of topics of issues including her handling of the Epstein files, also the existence of that so-called client list. She was also asked today Mooka about the Justice Department hiring January Sixers and the Trump administration's move to deploy National Guard troops to various cities across the country. Here's more on that with Illinois Democratic Senator Dick Durbin and Attorney General Pam Bondi sort of clashing over this topic. Were you consulted by the White House before they deployed National Guard troops to cities in the United States? I am not going to discuss any internal conversations with the White House. You won't even say whether you talked to the White House about this? I am NOT going to discuss any internal conversations with the White House with you chair ranking member. I noticed that. What's the secret? Why do you want to keep this secret? The American people don't know the rationale behind the deployment of National Guard troops in my state. The word is and I think it's been confirmed by the White House they are going to transfer Texas National Guard units to the state of Illinois. What's the rationale for that? Yeah Chairman as you shut down the government you voted to shut down the government and you're sitting here our law enforcement officers aren't being paid. They're out there working to protect you. I wish you loved Chicago as much as you hate President Trump and currently the National Guard are on the way to Chicago. If you're not going to protect your citizens, President Trump will. I've been on this committee for more than 20 years. That's the kind of testimony you expect from this administration. A simple question as to whether or not they had a legal rationale for deploying National Guard troops becomes grounds for personal attack. I think it's a legitimate question. It's my responsibility. Stand by. Thank you. And we go bonding was also asked about reports that White House borders are Tom Hellman accepted $50,000 before the 2024 election. This was over promises apparently of government contracts. Now, she said the investigation into that is now closed. She also added, Look, they found no credible evidence of any wrongdoing. She also says, quote, You're welcome to talk to the FBI again. This Senate committee hearing is ongoing. We'll continue to keep a close eye on this and bring you any big moments or spicy moments from this hearing as it continues.
