These tariffs will significantly increase the cost of products like beef and coffee at the US border, though around 700 products, including orange juice, aircraft, and energy, are exempt. The new duties affect about 36% of Brazil's total exports to the US, which currently accounts for 12% of Brazil's export market.

While some view the tariffs as an opportunity for Brazil to diversify its export markets, sectors such as fisheries are particularly vulnerable, having already lost access to the European Union due to previous bans. Economists suggest the overall impact on Brazil's economy will be limited, but uncertainty persists. The Brazilian government has appealed to the World Trade Organization in response to the new trade measures.

People are worried and angry that they're linked to the prosecution of their former president and Trump's political ally. Jair Bolsonaro's house arrest certainly made things worse, but I think they really shouldn't interfere, cannot interfere in our politics. Products like beef and coffee will now become one and a half times more expensive at the US border, but some are optimistic. This is an opportunity for Brazil to become less dependent, to diversify markets, to add value. The US accounts for only 12% of Brazil's total exports. Its shipments to China, meanwhile, have doubled in value over the past decade, now accounting for 28% of the total. And with around 700 products like orange juice, aircraft and energy being exempt, the new duties only apply to about 36% of the total value of Brazilian exports to the US. One sector that's bracing for impact is fisheries. The EU has locked Brazilian seafood out of its lucrative market since 2018, citing illegal fishing practices. And this has led to the sector having a greater reliance on the US market. The majority of our fresh fish exports go to the US and Europe. As we are banned from exporting to the European common market, we have no alternatives. Economists say the new tariffs are unlikely to derail Brazil's economy, but uncertainty remains. The Brazilian government has appealed to the World Trade Organization to help alleviate the trade food.
