A 12-year-old boy sustained serious injuries to both legs following a suspected bull shark attack at Jump Rock, a swimming spot near Shark Beach at Vaucluse in Sydney. The boy was rescued by his friends and received immediate first aid from police before being transported to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

Authorities have closed nearby beaches as a precaution and are investigating the circumstances of the attack, which is considered a rare event. Experts noted that recent heavy rainfall and increased water activity may have contributed to the conditions leading to the incident.

Inside this tent at Rose Bay Wharf, a fight to save a young boy's life. It was a horrendous scene at the time when police attended. We believe it was something like a bull shark that attacked the lower limbs of that boy yesterday. We saw all the fishing boats out there, we saw the police boats and the sirens going off and all the commotion, then we heard there was a shark attack. Rushed to Ranwick Children's Hospital with bites to both his legs, the 12-year-old was set upon at Jump Rock, a swimming spot near Shark Beach at Volclues. The actions of his teenage mates may have saved his life. There's one boy definitely entered the water to pull his mate out and the other boys assisted them up from the water onto the rock platform. A gallant recovery from his mates there on the rock platform at Volclues Point. So too the work of police on board this high-speed boat where they applied tourniquets and gave CPR before he was transported to waiting paramedics in Rose Bay. It was a textbook recovery to give this boy a fighting chance for survival. I think it was touch and go the entire time and still he's in a very dangerous position, not out of the woods yet. We're all thinking of him and his family in a tragic, tragic day in Sydney. Shark Beach was among those closed in the area today with swimmers told not to move outside the Nance. I've been here a long time, my whole life, 33 years and this area is notorious for sharks. With a six metre drop, Jump Rock is a popular spot for young people but police say a weekend of heavy rainfall created an added danger. We believe the combination of the brackish water, the fresh water, the actions of the splashing may have made that perfect storm environment for that shark attack. Bull sharks move to the murky waters of Sydney Harbour over summer and while numbers are hard to track, scientists say with more people in the water, encounters are rising. This combination of unusual circumstances come together for this and I have to emphasise it's an incredibly rare event to have any incident with a shark. The Department of Primary Industries is working with police while the 12-year-old boy continues to battle his injuries in hospital, surrounded by family. Hannah Stewart, 10 News.
