This morning, over 200 kids in Colorado are on a waiting list waiting to be paired up with a mentor. I became a mentor over four years ago and this is my mentee Carter and I right here and we are still matched up till this day and let me tell you, it's a very rewarding experience. I'm following up with big brothers, big sisters of Colorado and I talked with them about the need for mentors throughout our state. Your support community, your support Channel 7 has helped attract so many more mentors, especially those who are in the waiting list of mentors, especially diverse mentors. So I'm very grateful for that, but it seems like no matter how many we get more come. Alicia Cook, the president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado, tells me they have made progress in getting kids matched up because the list is usually at over 300 kids. Despite that work, you see the number behind me. 247 kids are on a waiting list and Cook says that 70% of those kids are young men cook says other commonalities are single moms raising boys, mentees dealing with traumatic events, and even kids not being raised by a birth parent. With all that in mind, it outlines the need for mentors of all ages and backgrounds, and that's why we are asking you to consider becoming a mentor. You don't have to be perfect, you just have to be present. You have to understand that every child needs a trusting, caring adult in their lives who is not their parent. And again, mentorship has been proven as one of the most cost effective ways to the community and recognized by the CDC as a prevention model for so many so many things.
